Is there anything better than a Guigni’s sandwich? I doubt it–well, not on a Thursday when the craving for that wonderful, tangy Guigni Juice (a signature dressing poured onto their sandwiches) is at an all-time high. I hadn’t been in ages, but decided to skip into St. Helena for a little Guigni’s fix today. Mmm, was it good.
I got the usual: veggie sandwich (with everything–lettuce, sprouts, tomato, onion, avocado, cucumber) and smoked cheddar cheese on a rosemary roll. Usually I try for the Dutch crunch roll but they were out, and it’s no wonder–Dutch crunch is terribly popular with Guigni’s-goers. Anyway, the sandwich was perfect. A true carbohydrate-packed delight. (Those rolls aren’t skimpy!)
Guigni’s is (or at least feels like) the last hold-out of the quirky shops that must have at one time lined Main Street St. Helena. I remember coming by years ago when in town to visit friends, and I think the same faded pictures are still on the walls. In addition to the great sandwiches, the place has a great whiff of nostalgia about it. While I couldn’t dream of eating Guigni’s every week (what with the roll size, lovely mayo, etc.), it sure is good to return once in awhile.
